In practice: a living language for life in the air

Translation practice

Working with aeroecologist Dr Chris Hassall, we treated radar data as material ripe for translation. Applying metaphor and visual tropes to historical and live datasets, we developed a storytelling framework that allows aerial life to be seen, shared, and discussed across different fields. The work evolved through collaboration with ecologists, artists, designers, technologists, and institutional partners including DEFRA, Natural England, and the National Trust.

Research impact

What emerged was a shared language for discussing the data: a storytelling framework that helps radar data to circulate across science, policy, and public contexts. Ecological security terminology is treated as a live, testable layer. This has led to new forms of collaboration between scientific, cultural, and institutional research users.
