In practice: user generated storytelling

Research context

A start-up CEO requested a new technology to power emotionally-capable, user-generated content for use within massively multiplayer games (MMO).

Development

Working with a small team, we developed StoryBricks, a new approach similar to the ‘Scratch’ language from MIT. It allowed user-generated content to drive emotional interactions between players and non-player characters (NPCs) to enable new kinds of online storytelling experiences.

Research impact

We developed a commercially valuable IP and technology based on a novel research-informed storytelling approach that allows users to create richer stories. After a round of pitching to funders around the globe, this novel technology was licensed exclusively by Sony Online Entertainment of America for their MMOs.
