Case Study: Aeroecology – A Living Language for Life in the Air
Research Context
Aeroecology tracks insects, birds, and bats moving through the atmosphere, often at vast scales and over long timeframes. The science is strong, but the primary evidence, weather radar, speaks in abstractions that don’t travel easily beyond specialist communities.
Translation Practice
Working with aeroecologist Chris Hassall, we treated radar data not just as measurement but as material for translation. Language, metaphor, and visual form became live tools for thinking, helping radar shift from meteorological infrastructure into something closer to an ecological sensing system.
Using historical and live datasets, we developed a storytelling framework that allows aerial life to be seen, compared, and discussed across different contexts. The work evolved through collaboration with ecologists, artists, designers, technologists, and institutional partners including DEFRA, Natural England, and the National Trust.
Research Impact
What emerged was not a single output, but a shared way of reading the data.
